Location: St. Kitts and Nevis is a part of the Leeward Islands group lying about 427.5 kilometers (225 miles) south-east of Puerto Rico and to the north of the Windward group of islands.
Geographic coordinates: 17 20 N, 62 45 W
History: Originally settled by Carib Amerindians and by the British in 1623 who fought with the French for possession. The island was finally ceded to Britain in 1783 and gained  independence in 1983.
Ruling Party: St. Kitts. Labor Party
Major Political Parties: St. Kitts Labor Party (SKLP), People's Action Movement (PAM), Nevis Reformation Party (NFP), Nevis Concerned Citizens Movement (NCCM).
Economic Summary: Both islands have pleasant scenery, good beeches and historic buildings, which have favored the development of tourism as the economy's most promising growth area.  A deep-water harbor, cruise-ship and container facilities are significant features in this sector's growth.

Agriculture is another important sector.  Sugar, the most important crop, in 1998 recorded production of an estimated 24,600 tons.

The manufacturing sector is also another potential growth sector, the main areas being food processing and production of beverages, and electronic components.

Hon. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas is the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis. (born January 14, 1953) He became leader of the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party in 1989 and won the general election in 1995. He has been prime minister since July 7, 1995, and was also foreign minister from then until 2000. He is a graduate of the University of the West Indies. He has a daughter who is a doctor and a namesake son.  His party won the elections again in the years 2000 and 2004. On October 27, 2006, Denzil was the honorary guest at a fundraising banquet for the Mount Carmel Pentecostal Church in the Bronx, whose pastors, Pastor Judith and Elder Moulton Esdaille are from the island of Nevis.
